The exact script I use to conduct user interviews that reveal genuine pain points and opportunities. No BS, no leading questions.
Interview Framework (45-60 minutes)
1. Introduction (2 minutes)
"Hi, I'm [name]. I'm a product designer researching how [target users] handle [broad activity].
"Is it okay if I record this for my notes?"
2. Warm-up (5 minutes)
- "What's your role?"
- "How long have you been doing this?"
- "What does a typical day look like for you?"
- "What's the most interesting part of your job?"
3. Current Workflow (15 minutes)
"Could you walk me through the last time you [did relevant activity]?"
Follow-up prompts:
- "What happened next?"
- "How did you do that specifically?"
- "Could you show me your screen?"
Listen for:
- Sighs
- "It's fine..."
- "We found a way..."
